Interactions with people shape your brain. This book is about social intelligence,i.e having  the capacity to express empathy and compassion. The concept lies in the acknowledgement of the other person as an individual and not as an object; a " You" rather than an "It"
The warnings of Goleman:
1. T
echnology is causing a social disconnect in society, characterized as a social corrosion, a creeping disconnection – email, web, game, video,iPod – reduce the quality of human interaction.
People live in a virtual meta-world 
2.  Social engineering  treats humans as a “I – It” rather than a “I – You” leading to social disconnect. 
3.Goleman advocates the concept of social communities, in schools, prisons, families, neighbourhoods, workplaces as a means of combating this social disconnect 
4. This “human connectedness” will overcome prejudice and discrimination as the “Them”becomes “Us” through empathy and compassion. This will overcome hatred and violence and promote healing and forgiveness.  Social intelligence is essential for our health, happiness and overall well being.

The questions:

I have made and kept some long lost connections since I began using social media. I have reached out to friend and associates in times of happines and sadness considering that we a disconnected geographically.

This book is from my personal collectio. It is written by  a librarian and a former online instructor of mine. It is a handy refernece guide that outlines all aspects of handheld devices that can be used in the classroom. Ann discusses the appropriate use of handheld devices in the classroom. Ann was before the Hype of the ipad however the guidelines provided for selecting hardware and software for electronic books, audio, video and podcasting are still very relevant for the classroom today. The book has a list of glossary terms and other resources.   If you are new to the use of mobile technology, this might be a place to start

Thomas Friedman's book is a must read for trend enthusiast. He makes reference to a flattned in the context that global competitiveness has leveled as there are more possibilities for people to compete across the globe. Friedman defines ten "flatteners" that he sees as leveling the global playing field: Collapse of the Berlin Wall symbolizing th end of the cold war; The sale of Netscape that broadened the access of the internet; Workflow software that allowed for greater collaboration; Uploading and outsourcing: Offshoring and Supply chaining; Insourcing and Informing: and last but not least what he refers to as the 'Steroids' - digital devices and Voice Over Internet Protocol. The "World is Flat" is about how disruptive technology can be and will make excellent reading.
